BP #3 - Mini Research on HeLa themes:Medical research / cancer research in the 1940s / 1950s

Our society have made significant improvement in the field of researching for drugs to treat cancer.  When people hear the word “cancer”, they usually think about the limited amount of time they have left.  The treatment that they go through is painful.  Half century ago, cancers were usually treated with surgery and radiation because there were only small selection of drugs available for treatment.  As time and effort were put into researching for improvement in this field, more drugs becomes available to patients with the diseases.  Drugs such as Mechlorethamine and Cyclophosphamide were the result of these researches.  The development of better cancer treatment definitely improved the quality of life for patients with cancer.  “During the early 1950s, the overall cure rate for cancer was 33%.  In 1976, half of all cancer patients survived more than 5 years after diagnosis. In 2005, closer to two thirds are alive 5 years after they learn they have cancer.”
